THIS time 70 years ago the Allied forces were making good inroads into Nazi-controlled France having landed on the beaches of Normandy a week earlier. The many soldiers who stepped onto the beaches on June 6, 1944, were taking the first steps in a long march of freedom across mainland Europe. The men who made the ultimate sacrifice for Britain – if not the world – on that fateful day are remembered every November in our towns and villages. But last Friday, in the confines of St Peter's Church and The Square, the people of Petersfield paid their respects to those who gave their tomorrow for our today.
