A BABY girl made a swift entry into the world last week after being born in the back of a car. Dad Alan Hartnett helped deliver his new daughter as mum Cara was being driven to hospital. Neighbour John Flowerdew drove Cara and Alan, of Kiln Avenue, Haslemere, but Amie Elizabeth Hartnett decided to arrive at Milford roundabout. Amie, who weighed 5lbs 11oz, was born two weeks early, on Sunday, June 1. Alan, 42, wrapped her up in his new jacket and John rang for an ambulance. Ambulance crew let Alan cut his new baby's umbilical cord before taking them on to Guildford's Royal Surrey Hospital while the neighbour drove home. Cara, 35, said: "Alan now has a special bond with her, he keeps saying 'I was the first one to hold her'." Meanwhile Cara's mother Christine was babysitting "big sister" Emly, three, and John's young children, Eve, India and Jack. Mother and baby are both healthy and were able to go back home the next day. Cara, said: "You could not have made it up. It was only by chance that John was there." Alan and Cara run Blue Hairworks, Grayshott and colourist Alan has been christened "Nurse Alan" by work colleagues. He said: "It was was inspiring and just unbelievable. Now everyone is joking: typical for a hairdresser to cut the cord, and you were cutting it fine." Cara said: "He was absolutely brilliant. I was on the back seat and my husband was in the front with the neighbour. "As soon as we got around the corner near St Bartholomew's church I started to push but I thought it would be all right, I will get there on time. "My husband was going, don't push, but I could not help it. While John was still driving I was giving birth. She just flew out and my husband just caught her. "Everybody said 'Oh my God.' Then I said, 'wrap her up' and he wrapped her in his new coat. John rang the ambulance and it was there in five minutes. "Afterwards we were laughing and said we could not believe this had happened to us." Mr Hartnett added: "I was more embarrassed about the neighbour, whom we hardly knew. He was really calm. He certainly knows Cara a bit better now." Cara said: "We could not believe that it happened so quickly, because my first took ages and I thought it would be longer. I decided to have a bath and then sleep for a couple of hours. "I was dozing and at 10pm, contractions started and at 10.45 I had her."
