A FARNHAM based community dance project aimed at getting young people active has been so successful that it has received further funding.

The Dance Movement, which is a resident dance company based at the Farnham Maltings, identified a demand from students at the University of Creative Arts (UCA) for dance fitness classes. To meet the need, The Dance Movement applied for and received a grant from Active Surrey.

The funding enabled classes to be put on for one term and to be offered to UCA students free of charge. The dance classes have been so well attended that Active Surrey has agreed to fund another course.

Rachel Palmer, programme director at The Dance Movement, said: “Dance is a wonderful way to get people active as it is varied, creative and fun. I am delighted that we are able to continue to offer the classes to students as the first course was very popular.

“We initially promoted the classes at the UCA Freshers’ Fayre and saw around 60 young people instantly sign-up to take part. It is great to have been able to work with the university and that the initiative to get more 18 to 25 year olds active has been successful.”

The dance classes will begin on Monday, February 1, and will be led by dancer Josh Boyle. They will be held at the UCA Students’ Union from 5.15pm to 6.15pm. To sign up, students should contact [email protected].
