ALTON College paid tribute to war dead through an imaginative and creative use of dance and technology for Remembrance Day called Movement, Memories and Movies. The dance emerged from a collaboration between the head of dance at Alton College, Rebecca Simpson and one of the IT staff, Michael Spoors. Mr Spoors created a video backdrop using personal and public images of war set to music. Eight students, studying for their second year of A level dance performed the piece as part of their exploration of group choreography for the term. The students will undergo their final examinations in the Spring. The piece the students performed was reflective, looking back and recreating the past. They loosely explored ideas of shell shock and soldiers on the front line as well as thinking about the support for each other and team work that soldiers had in battle. Mrs Simpson said: "It was an opportunity for us all to consider how working together and being a team created a bond that strengthened their will to survive. "The emotion of the imagery mixed with the music has enabled the students to really explore the camaraderie the soldiers might have felt and to express that through the medium of dance." Michael Spoor's presentation, using film and slide images was about the front line, the teamwork and dedication of the people fighting for their country. It was a thought provoking commentary about the effect on the men and women who were doing their bit for the war and a look at the genealogy of these heroes. The performance was very well attended by staff and students at Alton College. Vice principal Steve MacCormack commented: "We were delighted that the dance students have performed such an evocative and thoughtful production. It was a very moving reflection on War that provoked thoughtful contemplation for us all."
