MORE urgent calls have been made for speed cameras and other traffic calming measures on the A283 Petworth Road after the notorious stretch of road claimed the lives of a mother and her son last week.

Arlene Scott (50) and her 21-year-old son Guy died in an horrific crash near Chiddingfold last Tuesday afternoon

The latest accident happened at 2-40 pm around a mile north of Fisher Street and Gospel Green crossroads close to a bend near the Broken Spur Garage at Ramsnest, Chiddingfold.

It involved a dark blue Vauxhall Corsa travelling towards West Sussex which was in collision with a green Mazda 323 travelling towards Chiddingfold

Mrs Scott from Arundel, who had worked for West Sussex Social Services as a care assistant manager for 25 years, and her son Guy, a promising actor who was embarking on his third year as a drama student at Exeter University, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Another man, also believed to be from West Sussex, and driving the Mazda was taken to the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford with injuries which were not thought to be life threatening.

Firefighters from Haslemere spent several hours trying to free one of the victims. They were joined by part-time crews from Godalming and Petworth, a rapid intervention vehicle from Paines Hill and a heavy rescue tender from Chichester.

A police helicopter hovered overhead taking photographs of the scene.

The main A283 was closed for nearly four hours and local diversions were set up with southbound traffic diverted back along the A283 to Milford and on to the A286. Northbound traffic was diverted along the B2131 Rodgate Lane through Haslemere.

The road was not reopened until 7-30 pm.

Dena House, the manager of the Broken Spur Garage, which closed for business until the following morning, said she had heard that a trailer and tractor may also have been in the vicinity. She said the accident was "awful".

"The traffic goes too fast along this road, I sit here in my office and some of the traffic is travelling at speeds in excess of 70 miles per hour." she said

"It is the talking point locally. People just can't believe there has been another tragedy like this.

"This road is a nightmare, I come from the other side of Petworth and every day either coming here or going home I just hold my breath. I can't believe it has happened again," said Ms House.

The accident brings the toll of fatalities on the stretch of road to five within a year and nine since 1998.

It followed a fatal accident the previous Sunday morning just outside Northchapel when Paul Lee (22) of Rustington died when the car he was driving veered off the road and hit a tree.

The death toll includes two separate fatal road accidents, one in March, 2002 which killed a 48-year-old policeman, and another in August the previous year which killed a young father of three.

Both of those occurred close to the Winterton public house in Chiddingfold.

The police have appealed for witnesses to phone Dave Hughes on 01932 569922.
