LIPHOOK Day Centre has just appointed its long-time treasurer, David Lush, as the new president.
The post became vacant after Jean Jackson, who opened the centre in September 1982, passed away just over a year ago.
David, who joined the centre in Midhurst Road, in 1993, has now resigned from his position as treasurer and was completely surprised by the honour.
He worked for Lloyds Bank and was amply qualified for the job as treasurer, which has now been handed over to JMB Accountants in the village.
David has seen a lot of changes at the day centre, which has grown from an average number of a dozen clients to double that amount in the last 23 years.
“We used to get funding of £20,000 from social services when we first started, but now we have to organise lots of or own fundraising events to keep the centre going,” he said.
“We have had some tough times, but the last few years have been the best and all the clients, staff and volunteers have been lovely to work with. We were also fortunate to receive two considerable legacies from local ladies.
“I helped to set up the fundraising committee and both Bob Hall, our chairman, and Anne, his wife, have been working tirelessly to raise money.
“We also get good financial support from the annual Liphook Bike Ride as well as grants from various organisations - which is essential to keep the centre going.
“Everyone here is part of a team and they all make the day centre what it is today, which has now grown into a small business.”
David plans to enjoy his retirement but will still make regular visits to the centre in his new capacity as president.
