A SOLDIER convicted of killing two teenage members of the Aldershot, Farnham and District Athletic Club by dangerous driving will not have his sentence reviewed despite criticism that it was too lenient, the Attorney General’s Office has confirmed.
Michael Casey, 24, was jailed for six years and disqualified from driving for 10 years at Winchester Crown Court in April after pleading guilty to causing the deaths of Stacey Burrows, 16, and Lucy Pygott, 17, on November 8 last year.
However, his sentence has since faced criticism, and after it was revealed that Casey could be released on licence after three years, Stacey’s mother shouted from the public gallery: “I do not get my daughter back in three years, do I?:
The Attorney General’s Office subsequently received a request to review Casey’s prison term, but on Thursday confirmed it will not be referring the case to the Court of Appeal - explaining that the sentence was issued in accordance with legal guidelines.
The Government’s chief law officer said in a statement: “The Solicitor General Robert Buckland offers his sincerest condolences to the families of Lucy Pygott and Stacey Burrows.
“After careful consideration he decided not to refer the sentence of Michael Casey as he did not believe the sentence would be increased because it was in line with sentencing guidelines.”
Stacey Burrows and Lucy Pygott were on a training run near the army garrison in Queens Avenue, Aldershot when they were hit by Casey’s Ford Focus.
Both died at the scene, and the court later heard the serving soldier was over the legal drink drive limit and speeding at the time of the crash.
It came just days after Lucy, who was from Hartley Wintney, was highly commended at the Farnham Sports Awards having won a 3,000m bronze medal at the European Youth Championships last July.
Stacey, from Farnborough, was also the reigning Hampshire under-17 3,000m champion and both young athletes were honoured posthumously at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards last December.
