NAZANIN Zaghari-Ratcliffe, the wife of ex-Farnham man Richard Ratcliffe, who has been detained in Iran and accused of attempting to overthrow Iran’s government, has been removed from her prison cell and taken to Tehran’s Revolutionary Court.

It has been more than 100 days since Nazanin who works as a project manager for the Thomson Reuters Charity Foundation in London, was detained and her two-year-old daughter’s passport was confiscated by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Nazanin, 37, who holds both British and Iranian nationality, was visiting family in Iran with daughter Gabriella. However upon arrival at the airport on April 3 to come home she was detained by authorities and taken to an unknown location in Kerman Province.

Gabriella is currently being cared for by Nazanin’s parents. Richard said that his wife was profoundly upset and desperate after her first court appearance, which took place nearly four-and-a-half months after being detained.

Nazanin’s health appears to be deteriorating, as she continues to lose weight and her hair – she is also lacking physical strength.

It has now been reported that Nazanin will stand trial in a revolutionary court in Tehran before judge Abolghasem Salavati, who has been described as “tough” and “uncompromising”.

Although being accused of attempting to overthrow Iran’s government others believe she is a political pawn.

Amnesty International UK’s Individuals At Risk campaigns manager Felix Jakens, said: “As every day has gone by our concerns for Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe have grown. We’re extremely worried that she’s being used as a political pawn.

“We’ve always thought that her situation had all the hallmarks of a spurious, trumped-up case designed to exert diplomatic pressure on a Western country.”

“The Iranian authorities should resolve this now by either charging her with an internationally-recognised offence or by releasing her as soon as possible and allowing her to travel with her daughter back to the UK.”
