CONTROVERSIAL plans to build 134 homes and a children's nursery on land at Farnham Hospital have been given the green light. The outline plans were approved by Waverley Borough Council's development control sub- committee, despite objections from Farnham Town Council and local residents. The application was submitted by the Guildford and Waverley Primary Care Trust to develop the surplus land left after the building of the new hospital. The developers can now submit a more detailed planning application for the site. The hospital development will involve a new signal junction at Hale Road, Manor Road and Haven Way which will be paid for by the developers. The existing bus lay-by will be replaced by an on-street bus stop closer to the hospital entrance. Councillor Willy Marshall said he was disappointed with the decision. He said: "I personally voted for refusal on the grounds of the traffic problem this development could cause. "I don't think many people had a problem with the actual number of houses but I wasn't satisfied the traffic problems had been dealt with. "The removal of the bus lay-by in particular will create a headache. This bus lay-by is important because of the number of elderly people who use it to travel to and from the hospital. "If the bus is having to wait in the road while elderly people get on and off, it's going to cause a considerable build up of traffic. "As a councillor you have to accept these decisions, but the majority of people who have voted in favour of this are non-Farnham people and not everybody will have been on the site visit to see the specific problems." Planning officers had put forward a series of conditions for the application. These included making 54 of the new homes "affordable dwellings" for essential workers and people on the council's housing register. Another condition was the contribution of £8,823 to help improve the football pitches at Weybourne Recreation Ground, £98,061 towards the refurbishment of Farnham Sports Centre and nearly £15,000 to Surrey County Council towards local education provision. Farnham Town Council and local residents had strongly opposed the plans on the grounds of the extra traffic, especially in light of other proposed large developments such as Bourne Mill and East Street.
