OPPONENTS of Waverley Council's Brightwells scheme have been left devastated by the extent of their failure to disuade a government inspector from approving compulsory purchase of The Marlborough Head.

"Aghast" and "shocking travesty" were among typical comments after the report by inspector Colin Ball was released.

Despite detailed arguments heard during a 10-day public inquiry in January about the viability of the Brightwells development partnered with Crest Nicholson and the question mark over funding, Mr Ball described it as "shovel-ready".
