EAST Hampshire District Council's plans to sell off public open space in Alton and Four Marks have been put on hold pending further consultation. In a statement this week, EHDC has stressed that sale of the sites will not be progressed without further consultation with residents and town and parish councillors EHDC recently placed notices in the press prior to the possible advertising for sale of three acres in Alton, Four Marks, Bordon and Whitehill, Liss, Petersfield and Clanfield. All 13 plots are classified as open space and are on former council housing estates. The public notices were in line with obligations set out by central Government for councils to consider the disposal of surplus land they own. However, it has now been stressed, that "no decisions have been made to proceed with advertising any of the land for sale." One site, at Homefield Way in Clanfield, has already been removed from the list following discussion with local people. Councillor Andrew Joy, who has special responsibility for Alton, has confirmed that all remaining sites will be reviewed starting with the 0.3-acre kickabout space between Link Road and Manor Close and a 0.07-acre plot adjacent to 28 Baverstocks – both on the Manor estate in Alton. Other plots under review include Dennis Way in Liss and the New Road/Southurst site at Whitehill. The remaining sites will be subject to similar detailed consultation with residents later in the year. l EHDC owns approximately 139 acres of open space throughout the district. The 13 plots amount to 2.76 acres, or just under two per cent of the total.
