A NEW initiative has been put forward to improve public safety around schools in Bordon.
Dr Helen Walters has proposed a scheme that would see some dramatic changes to the Mill Chase Road, affecting travel to and from Weyford Infant and Junior schools, Mill Chase Comprehensive School and the Meadow School.
The plan would encourage more children to walk to school by improving pavements. Widths would be increased, adding more dropped curbs for buggies and wheelchair access and making the surface safer.
The changes would also see changes to the footbridge over the River Wey linking Lindford to Bordon, increasing its safety while improving its appearance.
The crossing patrol across Mill Chase Road would be moved to a better position and there would be a new crossing point on the B3004, in Lindford, making it safer for children to cross and, in turn, slowing traffic.
The scheme would enable parents to make use of Mill Chase Recreational Ground's newly-built car park, which would give parents 60 parking spaces.
Dr Walters set up a working group made up of teachers and parent governors of Weyford Infant and Junior Schools, and surveyed local residents to devise the recommendations, which have been fully supported by Mill Chase Comprehensive Secondary School, who are carrying out their own survey.
The proposals have now been put before the Hampshire County Council for consideration.
