Police have issued a warning to the public to be on their guard and not to fall victim of crime.

With the better weather there has been an increase in thefts, in particular break-ins to garden sheds and thefts of pedal cycles.

Garden outbuildings are being targeted to steal lawn mowers, hedge cutters and strimmers. Pedal cycles are being stolen by opportunistic thieves who are taking advantage of unlocked bikes.

With the warmer nights here, police are warning people not to leave downstairs windows open at night. They offer too tempting an opportunity for would be thieves.

Inspector Duncan Weston said: ÒWhat we are warning of can be prevented by good common sense. Buy a lock for your shed and, if possible, chain up your mower and tools. Lock up your pedal cycle, even if you are only leaving it for a few minutes. If you have to leave windows open at night, buy good quality window locks that can lock a window partially open and prevent access.Ó
