A LIFELONG Farnham resident and active member of The Bourne community Doris Jewell has celebrated her 104th birthday at Riverside Court care home.

Doris was born February 11, 1914, the only child of George and Margaret Jewell in Edward Road, off The Ridgway, but did have one stepbrother and two stepsisters.

She had a very happy childhood, and attended The Bourne School until the age of 14 before taking her first job as a nanny.

Doris later worked as a waitress at Rodgers Tea Rooms in The Borough, and it was then she met her future husband George Huckle who worked next door in The Spinning Wheel antique shop.

When she left she went to work for an army family as a house keeper, working from 7am to 9pm being paid 15 shillings (75p) a week.

Doris and George married in 1938 and moved to Middle Bourne Lane, where they had two children, Ken and Pat.

During the Second World War, while George was in the RAF, Doris worked for Whitlocks Dairy on The Ridgway delivering milk.

Post-war they both enjoyed cricket at The Bourne, Doris and her friend Dorothy Golding preparing teas for many seasons.

George was also the Scoutmaster of the 5th Farnham (Bourne) troop for many years - both enjoying going on the annual camp, where Doris did the cooking.

Sadly George died in 1970, and Doris continued living in the family home until she met Albert Bendall. They married in 1974 and lived in Timber Close before moving to Riverside Court.

Doris and Albert enjoyed holidays together in USA and Europe before Albert’s death in 2004. Doris still lives at Riverside Court, off Mike Hawthorn Drive, enjoying visits from her loving family.
