THE Dhanmondi Restaurant in Whitehill was a scene of a double celebration on Sunday after reaching its fifth anniversary and winning a prestigious curry award. The restaurant on Petersfield Road was recently named as one of the top 100 curry restaurants in the UK in The Curry Awards 2007. Guests dined in style for the celebratory evening of curry and Champagne, with accompanying music from Bordon's up-and-coming violinist, Berri Munn. Whitehill mayor David Williamson opened the evening. He said: "When I was invited to this evening it was to celebrate Dhanmondi's fifth anniversary, then I was told that it had been shortlisted in the top 100 restaurants in the South East – now we learn that Dhanmondi is among the top 100 curry restaurants in the UK. "This is a magnificent achievement and it has been awarded to a restaurant here in Whitehill and Bordon. It's something to be very proud of." Owner Abdul Hamid said: "I wish to thank all who supported Dhanmondi Restaurant over the years, including my family and staff for their hard work. It is a great honour to be listed in the UK's top 100 curry restaurants and we are delighted to have been shortlisted. Our thanks to the people of Whitehill and Bordon and to all our customers for their support." Mr Hamid picked up his plaque from TV presenter Chris Tarrant on Sunday, October 21, at the glamorous award ceremony. Berri Munn will be playing at the restaurant again on Thursday, November 15, from 7pm to 9.30pm. As a student at South Downs College and the prestigious Trinity College of Music, Ms Munn is working hard to raise money for her tuition fees. Ms Munn said: "When I discovered I had won my place at the Trinity College of Music, London, I began fundraising furiously as I have to fund myself. I worked full time over the summer as a riding instructor and groom at my local stables. "I currently teach three violin pupils and I completed a 26-mile bike ride in under my target time of two hours." Tickets cost £11 and Hamid has offered to donate a percentage of the proceeds towards the college fees. To book a ticket, or table, call the restaurant on 01420 477666.
