GP David Eyre-Brook will be swapping chocolate eggs for two wheels this year as he and a friend, Manda, spend their Easter weekend cycling more than 200 miles to raise money for Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.

The challenge is one of their own creation, the Phyllis to Paris bike ride. Having joined Phyllis Tuckwell as a voluntary trustee four years ago, Dr Eyre-Brook knows the importance of the care which the charity provides to the community.

Dr Eyre-Brook, who confesses to be more of a runner than a cyclist, said: “The care which Phyllis Tuckwell offers is second to none and is vital for those who are facing a terminal illness, such as cancer.

“I did the London-Brighton bike ride many years ago, and was thinking of cycling from London to Paris, but then I thought – why not Phyllis Tuckwell to Paris? It’s a big challenge, but we’re determined to make it, and raise money for this amazing local charity at the same time.”

As well as being a senior partner of Dapdune House Surgery in Guildford, Dr Eyre-Brook is also the chairman of the Clinical Commissioning Group for Guildford and Waverley, which works with hospitals, community trusts and social services to care for those living in the Waverley borough.

He and Manda will be setting off on March 25, which is Good Friday and will head first to Portsmouth, where they will take the ferry to Caen, cycle to Le Havre and then follow the Seine to Paris.

They plan to cycle 80 miles a day on Easter Saturday and Sunday, and anticipate the French leg of the journey taking three days to complete, meaning that they will arrive in Paris around lunchtime on Easter Monday.
