HASLEMERE’S deputy mayor Sahran Abeysundara is urging shops in and around the town to decorate their shop fronts and displays to celebrate the Queen becoming the longest reigning British monarch in history on Wednesday, September 9.

Councillor Abeysundara, who runs The Silk Road interior design shop in Wey Hill, is writing to other business owners inviting them to join in the celebrations by decorating shop windows, flying flags or hanging bunting to commemorate the historic event.

The showroom windows will be decorated on the night of September 8, to be ready for the morning, flying the union flag, the Royal crest, bunting outside the store and installing a red, white and blue window display.

Barrow Hills School in Witley will also be commemorating the occasion with each pupil being given a souvenir coin from the Royal Mint and activities throughout the day.
