ALTON has enough cafes and charity shops, what it needs are more retail outlets – that's the message TV retail expert Mary Portas can expect to hear when she starts filming in Alton this summer. Well known for her retail and business related television shows, and her appointment by David Cameron to lead a review into the future of Britain's high streets, 'Mary Queen of Shops' is set to return to Channel 4 with a new TV series, offering help to independent shops and business in Alton. Among those welcoming her intervention will be independent cafe owners desperate to encourage more retailers into Alton, to bring a balance to the town centre offering which, they say, has become top heavy with food outlets and charity shops – a situation that is putting their own businesses at risk.
