Edgeborough School in Frensham donated 2,318 books to the Children’s Book Project, the largest number of books ever collected by a single school.

Across London and the UK a quarter of disadvantaged children own less than 10 books, while one in eight have none at all.

It has an impact not only on these children’s academic outcomes but also on their wellbeing, emotional development and sense of themselves as a reader.

The Children’s Book Project directly tackles the ‘book gap’ and gifts donated books to targeted communities across the Capital.

Edgeborough’s charity representative, Mrs Khan said: “WOW! I am so, so thrilled with the children and the Edgeborough Community for pulling together and collecting a record number of books.

“We are passionate about reading at Edgeborough and are delighted the books will be given to families so more children have access to books at home that can become an exciting source of information, learning and enjoyment.”

A spokesperson from the Children’s Book Project added: "What a result.

“I think it might be the largest number of books ever collected by a single school!

“Please send a huge thank you onto all the parents and particularly the children at Edgeborough on behalf of all of us at the Children’s Book Project.

“I hope the children enjoyed sorting through their bookshelves and passing on their books to spread the joy of reading onto more children."
