BOHUNT student Ben Jackson, from Liphook, who has earned a place on an Arctic Expedition to Greenland next year, has chosen an unusual way of raising money towards the £4,500 costs of the trip.

As one of only 12 students selected to go to Greenland, the 14-year-old pupil decided to raise some of the money by completing a sponsored swim.

The original challenge was to swim the equivalent of the Channel in 10 days.

In preparation he started with a 10,000 meter swim at Farnham Leisure Centre, covering 400 lengths, the equivalent of 6.25 miles, in just under four hours.

Since then and with the help of his swimming teacher, Maureen Coffin, Ben has pushed himself to complete the Channel swim at the centre in just five days and managed to achieve his goal of 23.4375 miles, swimming 1500 lengths, within the time frame he set himself, raising a total of £2,835 toward the Greenland trip.
