TEAM GB may have had an exceptional time in Rio, but Team Churcher’s enjoyed its own ‘terrific Thursdays’ and ‘fantastic Fridays’ as its medal table is looking hugely impressive and breaking all previous records as well.
With over 20 per cent of all the exams graded at the exceptional A* level - that is 90 per cent or above - well over half at A and A* grade, and comfortably over 80 per cent of the exams scoring an A* to B grades, all the college’s previous academic records are tumbling.
Added to that there was an exceptional year in respect of Oxbridge applications. Eight achieved their offers and are off to Oxford or Cambridge to read modern languages, chemistry, computer science, maths, medicine or engineering. With five medics and two vets to add to the equation, there were golden results aplenty to celebrate.
When it comes to Olympic cycling ace Jason Kenny-like collections of top awards, Churcher’s had a few of those as well.
Lawrence Hollom has returned home to collect five gold medal A* grades in his A-levels after representing the United Kingdom in international maths competitions in Hong Kong and Russia - competitions that saw the UK team of the six best mathematicians in the country placed seventh out of 109 countries in the world.
Joining Lawrence atop the winners’ podium with nothing but gold medal A* grades in their A-levels are: Cassie Shorten, who joined Churcher’s for the sixth form from TPS; James Hargreaves, Joe Hunt, Seb Dows-Miller, Vanessa Pearson, Matt Waters, Rosa Parks and Joe Blackmore.
The individual achievements of the A-level students allow them to move on to the most prestigious universities and courses in the country and everything suggests that entry to first- choice universities among this year’s A-level students at Churcher’s will be remarkably strong as well.
But Churcher’s students have been notching up some notable life skills too.
Having spent five weeks on expedition in Ecuador and Galapagos, 57 of the Churcher’s students have certainly picked up new experiences to add to the hefty collection they already possess from their extraordinary involvement in sport and music and drama and art and adventurous activities which are the hallmarks in the Churcher’s success stories.
