A TEAM of year 11 pupils from Weydon School have become the first all-girl delegation to win the top prize at the Model UN, an educational simulation in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations.

The ‘Best Delegation’ prize was awarded to the Farnham students, representing the Ukraine at Calthorpe Park School, by a BBC journalist based on their research, attention to detail, staying true to their adopted country’s values, awareness of the issues affecting their country as well as their ability to debate and counter points thrown at them.

They had both of their resolutions passed - a significant achievement, not least because many of the delegations seeking to block their resolutions were sixth form students - and will now make their way to Parliament to raise awareness of issues important to young people.

Weydon’s ‘Chinese’ and ‘Iranian’ delegations also performed well, with Iran staying true to their adopted country by staging a dramatic walkout.

Katie Darlow, history teacher, said: “I am so proud of these students. They performed commendably and were very prepared for the debate.

“To win against sixth formers who were debating at such a high standard, is an amazing achievement.”
