A FARNHAM school has picked up an award for bringing the world into its classrooms.
Weydon School, based on Weydon Lane, has had its overseas travel opportunities recognised by scooping the British Council’s prestigious International School Award.
Members of the proud school’s international team travelled to the Houses of Parliament in London to receive the award from Sir Ciarán Devane, chief executive of the British Council.
The International School Award celebrates the achievements of schools that do exceptional work in overseas education.
The award is sought after worldwide by schools from countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Cyprus and Pakistan.
Around 5,500 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since the British Council scheme began in 1999.
Weydon received the award in recognition of its outstanding work introducing international education into the curriculum and embedding it within the school’s culture – to give young people a window into different cultures and countries, helping them develop as responsible global citizens and preparing them for life and work in a global society.
All the trips and clubs provided by Weydon School contributed to this successful application, including expeditions to Ghana and Sri Lanka, trips to Germany, a French exchange programme, Model UN club, World Toilet Day, a Commonwealth class children’s short story competition, and international PE tour to Australia.
Sir Ciarán said: “Weydon School has brought the world into its classrooms, earning them the British Council International School Award.
"Their pupils’ education is enriched with international activities that help children develop the skills they need to thrive in a globalised world.”
Morgane Laurens, Weydon’s international schools co-ordinator, added: “This is such a huge honour for our team and for the school. We have worked tirelessly with the students over the years and it is wonderful to be recognised in this way.”
