YEAR 11 students across the Weydon Multi Academy Trust were the first year group to sit the new format GCSEs in English literature, English language and mathematics with all remaining subjects still following the old grading system.
The new GCSEs have been reformed in three ways, they are harder, with more rigorous content bringing them into line with the best education systems globally; and a new system of grading has been introduced with the old A* to G grades being replaced by a 9 to 1 system (with 9 being the highest).
The new GCSEs are said to give more focus to end of year exam results rather than the controlled assessments and coursework of the old GCSE.
Because of these changes the results are not easily compared with previous years. At Weydon 85 per cent of students achieved a grade 4 or above in the new style English and mathematics GCSE with 68 per cent achieving a strong pass.
Forty-four per cent grade 9s were achieved by the year group and 15 Weydon students were on ‘Cloud Nine’ gaining grade 9s in one or more of the three new GCSEs.
The Government has made it clear that a four should be viewed as a pass in the same way the old grade C was considered to be.
It is believed that nationally less half the number of students that would previously have achieved an A* will obtain the new grade 9.
Following this year’s release, now former pupil Jonty Woodbridge said he is really pleased and happy that all the hard work paid off.
While Leila Al-Azzawi, added: “Yes it was tough, yes there were tears, but it’s 1,000 per cent worth it for the smiles today.”
Reflecting on the results, the chief executive of Weydon Multi Academy Trust, John Winter, said: “These results are testament to the hard work, preparation and enthusiasm of our students, our staff and the support of parents.
“We have embraced the changes and achieved remarkable results, not least given the challenging timescales since the changes were formalised.
“At this stage, we are not able to compare our results with others nationally. however this data will become available in the coming weeks.
“We will be ensuring that the achievements of every student across the Weydon Multi Academy Trust is recognised and we will be working closely with colleges and training organisations to secure them all excellent post 16 opportunities.
“These results represent a very significant part of the student’s education, but as with any outstanding school experience the grades must be balanced against the students many other achievements in sport, the arts and music.
“These areas are as important to the student’s well-being and enjoyment of school life as the results and we must be sure to recognise this on results day.”
