SPECIAL guest at the opening of Shottermill Junior School’s new library was children’s author David Fulle, author of the popular ‘football crazy’ Alfie Jones series.

Haslemere Mayor Sahran Abeysundara cut the ribbon and fellow guests included supporters who have helped fund the project, including county councillor Nikki Barton, representatives from Haslemere Bookshop, the town’s Tesco and the school’s Parent Teacher and Friends Association.

Headteacher Kate Barnes said: “In a time when all schools are struggling with cuts to their budgets and school libraries are on the decline, we felt it was very important to work hard to raise the funds to safeguard our library which had deteriorated over the years.

“At Shottermill, we place a high priority on fostering a love of reading and our children love our new library which is split into two zones for fiction and non-fiction study.

“The children love the comfy seating, mood lighting and it is now a warm, bright and modern space to learn.”
