LUCKY Weydon School students experienced an inspirational trip to Florida before Easter.
The school’s annual science trip for almost 50 Year 10 and Year 11 students took in trips to Disney World, Kennedy Space Centre, Wonderworks science and technology activities centre, and Universal Studios.
The students discovered the Epcot and Magic Kingdom theme parks at Walt Disney World and took part in educational workshops on polymers and forces which helped to explain the science and workings behind each park.
They also enjoyed a fun-packed day at Universal Studios’ Islands of Adventure and spent a day at the Kennedy Space Centre where they were treated to a tour of the whole site with a NASA guide and a closer view of the launch pad sites.
The group also visited the museum which has the Atlantis shuttle on display, suspended from the ceiling in all its glory for visitors to admire.
Atlantis, which completed 33 missions to the International Space Station, is displayed as only spacewalking astronauts have seen her before, rotated 43.21 degrees with the payload doors open and its robotic arm extended, as it has just undocked from the space station.
Some of the students also experienced the simulation rides and the giant IMAX theatres.
The trip included a meal out at a restaurant, a shopping trip at one of Orlando’s famous malls and a week filled with unforgettable memories.
“It was amazing!” said a school spokesman.
“The students were brilliant and were a pleasure and a lot of fun to be with, and were praised for their excellent company and outstanding behaviour by the educational experts at Disney, NASA, Wonderworks and Virgin Airlines.
“Huge thanks must go to the incredibly hardworking and dedicated team of staff, Tom Jackson, Pete Marsh, Lou Iles, Carol Warnock, Simon Harvey and Tine Deadman without whom this trip would not have been such a huge success.”
