WEYDON School has celebrated the opening of its new purpose-built Medici theatre with an X-Factor style talent show.

Students have been auditioning over recent weeks to get through to the final and performed their songs in front of an audience of more than 300 parents, staff and fellow pupils.

Each student also had a specially-made ‘VT’ about their X Factor “journey”.

Many of the performers were in years seven to nine. Songs included Sam Smith’s Writings on the Wall, Paloma Faith’s Upside Down and Coldplay’s Sky Full Stars.

One year seven contestant, Libby Wickendan, even composed her own song for the competition.

The contestants were judged by three members of staff who put on a great show of their own with their comments, and the event was hosted by Max Fulham and Molly Beere who added to the humour and entertainment.

During the interval the audience voted for their first, second and third choices and the votes were counted.

Milly Painter and Maddy Moran were voted the people’s choice and came first with their rendition of 7 Years by Lukas Graham. The girls are also in the process of recording their single to sell for charity.

Sarah Gilbert, Weydon’s director of performing arts, said: “I have been so impressed by the commitment, talent and enthusiasm of all the contestants.

“It has been a fantastic experience for everyone involved and a brilliant way to open the new space.”
