CHILDREN and staff at St Mary’s Infant School in Frensham had great fun celebrating a postponed World Book Day.

Everyone in the school was dressed up as characters from Julia Donaldson’s books, which include The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, The Snail and the Whale and a number of others.

The school also had a very special visitor when they celebrated reading on Friday, March 9, as the Gruffalo himself even dropped by.

There was a grand parade in the morning which welcomed snails, ladybirds, witches and dragons, to name just a few of the fantastic costumes created by parents.

The day was packed with themed activities which included making paper dolls and creating ’wanted’ posters to catch the Highway Rat, based on another of Julia Donaldson’s books.

The school also enjoyed a visit from the Booster Cushion Theatre Company who performed a very interactive performance of ’Old McDonald and the Three Pigs Plusâ?¦’.

The interactive show combined the well-known story of The Three Pigs with the Old McDonald Had a Farm rhyme.

It was full of animal props, colourful pages, pop ups and a five metre wide book.

One student at the school, Kitty, said: "I had my face painted, and I thought ’I am allowed to have my face painted in school!’"

Fellow pupil Mya added: "I was just so pleased we still had dressing up day - when it snowed I didn’t think it would happen but it did!"

Maxwell said: "I was Zog and I loved it", while Annie added: "I was Rhyming Rabbit and I loved playing in my costume."
