EAST Hampshire District Council has taken steps to remove travellers who have settled at Penns Place in Petersfield.

Earlier this week caravans appeared on land next to the council offices and action is being taken to remove the uninvited visitors.

EHDC spokesman Steve Bradley said the council is moving as quickly as possible to "remove them and clean up the land".

Travellers also appeared this week at the recreational land known as Dell Piece in Horndean.

The travellers were served with a notice to leave the site and the land was vacated by Wednesday morning.

It is the second time that travellers have visited the site and Mr Bradley said that the council would now consider erecting barriers to prevent further invasions.

But, at the time of going to press, the four caravans at the Penns Place site had not been removed and Mr Bradley said the district council was about to take legal steps.

He said: "Local authorities have to observe the due process of law in situations involving travellers and a number of steps have to be taken before eviction can take place.

"Following interviews with the travellers to establish their ability to move on, a notice is served."

Mr Bradley told The Herald that a notice is usually enough to remove them but said that the district council could serve them with a summons to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates Court. In court the council would ask for an order requiring the removal of all vehicles and other property from the land.
