POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an elderly Bordon couple were tricked out of money twice during one week.

During the first incident, a male stranger visited the couple at home, in Liphook Road, between Tuesday, November 12, and Wednesday, November 13.

He claimed to have carried out work on their roof for which they paid him £550, but the work was never completed.

The suspect is described as white, 6ft 1in tall and of medium build. He was driving a small white van.

Pc Tristan Flanagan, of Alton police, said: "The man was on the roof of the address for some time during this incident, which occurred during daylight hours, and I would, therefore, be keen to hear from anyone who was passing by and saw anything which may assist our investigation."

The victims' address was visited again during the afternoon of Monday, November 18, by two men who said they were there to carry out work and needed money for materials. A total £140 was given to the men and, again, no work was carried out.

Pc Flanagan said: "Please remember to ask anyone who knocks on your door for identification and if you are thinking about having any work done: ask friends or relatives to recommend tradesmen; ask for a written quote; shop around before making a decision; don't pay upfront; and pay by cheque or credit card."

Anyone with information should call Pc Flanagan on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
