AN accident in PetersfieldÕs busy High Street left an elderly woman with a fractured hip last Friday morning.

A red Citroen which was being towed, lost contact with the vehicle towing it and mounted the pavement outside The Edinburgh Woollen Mill.

A police spokesman has now warned of the dangers of not following correct procedures when towing cars. He said there could be Òtragic consequencesÓ if car owners did not use proper recovery vehicles.

The spokesman said the accident was believed to have happened because the car, which had a broken water pump, had power steering and braking which was less effective when the engine was not running.

Police have warned car owners not to take the Ôcheap optionÕ by getting a friend to tow them, but to get a proper recovery vehicle.

The woman was injured when she attempted to run from the path of the oncoming vehicle.

She was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, for treatment.

The car only narrowly avoided smashing through the shop front of the Woollen Mill, by the entrance to Rams Walk, and the scene was coned off while police talked to the driver and witnesses.

The driver was unhurt.
