ELSTEAD wound the clock back a hundred years last Saturday as the village commemorated the centenary of the end of the First World War.

A day of activities honoured the villagers who served their country during the 1914 to 1918 conflict.

Starting at 10.30am, the 38 Elstead men to lose their lives in the war were represented by ‘silent soldiers’ on a poignant ‘Bring Him Home’ walk, led by a horse and cart between Elstead village green and the war memorial.

This was followed by a moving service of Remembrance, and the unveiling of a six-foot ‘Tommy’ at the village hall by Waverley mayor Denise Le Gal and Colonel Patrick Crowley from the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment to act as a permanent memorial to Elstead’s fallen war heroes.

Visitors could also explore a number of exhibitions and displays on the day.
