MOST of the work involved in the £500,000 scheme at the Whitehill roundabout should be completed by the end of next week, Hampshire County Council has said.

The bulk of the A325 road improvement scheme is expected to be completed and temporary traffic lights should be removed.

It will signal the end of weeks of misery for drivers since the project started in November.

It was due to be completed by mid-March, however poor weather and unscheduled work on the drains put the project, which included the roundabout, a toucan crossing and new footways, severely behind schedule.

County council spokesman Sarette Martin explained: "We expect the work to be substantially completed by the end of next week, although some work will continue on the verges and things like that.

"We still have to put an anti-skidding surface down on the approach to the roundabout and some signage needs to be put up."

These measures, as well as new lighting, are part of a package of measures to slow traffic down and, as a result, decrease the number of accidents on the A325.

Once all the work is completed, new 30 mph signs will be erected between Whitehill Working Men's Club and the Conde Way roundabout, reducing the speed limit from 40 mph.
