FIFTY years of town trading is coming to a close this month when Alton’s final Friday market will be held.

The market will be held in the foyer of the Methodist Church, on Draymans Way, on December 18, from 9am-11.30am.

The Market Group, which began life as a women’s institute market selling homegrown produce, baked goods and preserves, became Country Markets Ltd in 2004 and at one time there were 450 markets held through the country and the Channel Islands.

“Now there are only 320 left, as unfortunately it seems there is no longer a need for the small local markets we represent,” said Sheila Stevens who, with Dawn Padwick, is in charge of the Friday market.

Over the years they have held their markets in Alton Assembly Rooms and the community centre, but after breaking away from Country Markets the group became an independent business and for the last five years have been in the foyer of the Methodist Church.

“We cannot thank the church members enough for their hospitality and friendship,” said Sheila.

As well as their Friday market, the group has had a stall at the monthly farmers’ market and also one at the Alton Show.

Sheila said: “We have built up a reputation for delicious home-baked cakes and home-made preserves with customers coming from miles away for a special order.

“However, Christmas is almost upon us and we will remain as busy as ever until we close. We are taking orders for Christmas cakes, puddings and mince pies, and we have a range of craft items that make excellent Christmas present along with our preserves.”

She said they wanted to offer thanks to all their customers over the years, adding: “We will miss you and on behalf of Alton Friday market we wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.”

There is some good news for customers as the group is about to introduce an online ordering system. To place orders, visit altonfridaymarket.co.uk. Collections will be at the church.
