An author is going back to where it all began - almost - for the launch of the paperback version of her seventh novel.

Kate Lord Brown is promoting The Golden Hour at One Tree Books at Madeleine’s Kitchen in Petersfield on August 28 at 6.30pm.

The bookshop has temporarily moved from Lavant Street to Chapel Street after an electrical fire in early July left its original premises without a roof.

Kate began writing her first novel, The Beauty Chorus - published in 2011 - in the café of One Tree Books’ traditional home while her baby slept.

She said: “I'm really delighted to be coming back to a place which still feels like home. Petersfield is lucky to have some wonderful independent stores and I'm thrilled to launch the new paperback with two of the best.”

From Cairo in 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, and then more than 30 years later, to 1970s Beirut on the brink of yet another conflict, The Golden Hour is an epic dual timeline story.

It interweaves glory-seeking desert archaeologists, priceless treasures, Nefertiti’s tomb and the decadent cabarets of wartime Cairo with restless expat lives in bohemian Beirut.

Archaeologist Lucie Fitzgerald's mother is dying – she's also been lying. As her home city of Beirut - the 'Paris of the Middle East’ - teeters on the brink of war in the 70s, Polly Fitzgerald has one last story to tell from her deathbed. It’s the tale of her childhood best friend Juno and their life in 30s Cairo.

Kate Lord Brown was a finalist in ITV's The People's Author contest and her novel The Perfume Garden was shortlisted for the Romantic Novel of the Year 2014 award.

She has written editorial, reviews and regular columns for Traveller, Conde Nast, Good Housekeeping, Writers' News, Arts Business, Gulf Times, Woman, the Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Express.
