It’s all aboard for a magical Christmas at the Watercress Line’s spectacular Steam Illuminations.

From November 27 to January 2 passengers on the heritage railway can enjoy an unforgettable evening of sparkling lights, favourite tunes and festive fun.

A traditional steam train will be transformed into a mesmerising light show, with thousands of synchronised LED bulbs, seasonal music and enchanting entertainment throughout the journey.

New for 2026 is Disco Ball Alley, featuring suspended mirror balls that create a dazzling light display across the countryside, filling the carriages with shimmering disco vibes. An upgraded Snow Light Cascade will enhance the magical spectacle.

Passengers can enjoy interactive games, jolly singalongs and the return of ‘Voiceover Man’ from Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor. New this year is his Voiceover Man Christmas Quiz.

Steam Illuminations features Christmas Vibes until December 28, providing fun and Christmas tunes for all the family. From December 29 to January 2, Party Anthems provides a perfect night out for friends and work parties - a chance to sing and dance in the aisles to hits from the 1960s to the present.

All passengers will receive an interactive LED wristband which flashes in sync with the music that they can take home as a memento.

The ride departs from Alresford or Alton, with the steam train journey lasting one hour and 45 minutes. Passengers can enjoy seasonal refreshments, sweet treats and warming drinks, with festive picnic boxes available to order.

At Alresford there will be chalets in the Christmas Village, illuminated projections, talking and singing trees and a new marshmallow-toasting area.

Watercress Line chief executive Rebecca Dalley said: “There’s something wonderful about celebrating Christmas on a steam train, and our Steam Illuminations give families and friends the chance to create memories together that they’ll treasure long after the decorations come down.”
