ELSTEAD’S famous paper boat race returned last week at the Elstead Moat, again organised by the village’s Guide and Brownie groups.
Villagers, school children, Brownies and Guides once again assembled imaginative boats to correspond with this year’s theme ‘time travel’.
Participants built craft out of cardboard and newspaper, took them to the water and raced. The winner was the boat that achieved the most laps before sinking.
The boat race saw an array of entries including ‘The Starship Enterprise’ from Star Trek and ‘The Way Back’ named after Mr Sherman and Mr Peabody.
Among all the fun in the water, visitors enjoyed refreshments, raffles, a lucky dip, face painting and a stall selling goodies made by the Brownies and Guides.
They were able to indulge in cakes, ice creams and jolly jam jars which eventually all sold out!
Many raffle prizes were won at the end of the afternoon.
“It was a beautiful sunny day - perfect for water activity!”, said Elstead Guide leader Sarah Mayor.
“A big thank you to everyone involved, including, the donations of raffle prizes, sponsors on the day, skip/trailer help, everyone who took part and the Brownies, Guides and leaders who organised the successful event.
“An amazing amount was raised for the Elstead Guides and Brownies and the money will be put towards some wonderful events.”
The winners:
• Junior winner - Han Manseck with 5.5 laps in his small silver boat named ‘Outatime’ (Back to the Future).
• Senior winner - Dan Pritchard with 3.5 laps in his amazing Delorean themed boat called ‘Marty McBoatface’.
• Best Design - The Long family with their beautifully designed gold greek warship named ‘Argo 111’ (Argo 3).
• Best Sinking - The Brownie Tardis in the adult race with a spectacular sinking in their amazingly designed Dr Who Tardis with flashing light.
