A PROPOSAL to extend parking facilities at The Herons leisure centre in Haslemere has been rejected by Haslemere councillors who claim that existing facilities are ÒadequateÓ.

The 16 extra spaces are intended to accommodate extra vehicles that come to the fitness centreÕs four annual swimming galas.

The application was submitted by Waverley to compensate for the loss of overflow parking in the tennis courts before the skate park was built.

At last ThursdayÕs meeting of the planning and highways committee, Michael Foster said that he Òdid not see the necessity for hard surfacing for the extra parking on these rare occasionsÓ.

Ted Orchard said that he didnÕt think Waverley trustees had been doing their job properly. ÒI have grave misgivings about the way the whole thing is being handled,Ó he said. ÒIt will obscure an attractive area.Ó

Mr Orchard agreed with Mr Foster in asking why the extra cars could not be accommodated on the grass, or the through road.

Michael Biddiscombe said that it was not a matter of needing 16 spaces, that they were not enough to make a difference.

ÒThey couldnÕt possibly provide parking for all of them,Ó he said. ÒFor 361 days a year the car park is adequate.Ó

He accepted that when people come for the galas they spread across the area to park, but on Sundays this should not affect anyone.

The matter will now be discussed at a future Waverley southern area control sub committee.
