FAIRTRADE was a hot topic when Farnham MP Jeremy Hunt paid a special visit to St Peter’s School.
The school has been granted the national Fairtrade Achiever Award for the second time and pupils explained how St Peter’s had achieved that.
Themes of equality and justice are embedded across the curriculum and the school is linked with a school in Ghana to help them understand about people’s lives in different countries.
Deputy head Sarah Marshall said: “The meeting was the result of letters the children wrote to Mr Hunt during Fairtrade Fortnight. Children have worked hard to communicate the Fairtrade story within the immediate community but they wanted to discuss possible ways of taking the message further.”
Mr Hunt commented: “Farnham is a wonderful town – but compared to so many parts of the world, also very privileged. So I found it very heartening that young people here are so committed to thinking about Fairtrade and the relief of poverty.
“We had a really good discussion and it is great that these young people are already seeing how they can help and make an impact.”
Following the discussion, a group of Y5 pupils performed an upbeat Fairtrade song which they had written themselves.
