POLICE in the Whitehill and Petersfield area are asking shop workers to remain vigilant when it comes to checking the authenticity of notes given as payment.
It follows a number of incidents where counterfeit Scottish notes have been handed to shops in the area.
Sergeant Peter Miller said: "Scottish notes are legal tender and can be used as payment in England.
"What we want to do is make shop workers aware that fake £20 notes have been used in this area.
"The notes we have recovered are printed on normal paper, not bank linen paper, so will feel slightly different to a normal note. All the ones used so far are also carrying the same serial number of 801364.
"Anyone who is handed a fake note as payment should contact police immediately." Anyone with information about this should contact Whitehill or Petersfield Police Stations on 0845 045 45 45 or call the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
