TWO BROTHERS have been on the trip of a lifetime, hoping to raise awareness of having a sibling with Downs Syndrome by creating a documentary.
Nick, 27, and Alex, 24, travelled to four different countries, living with pairs of siblings for up to two weeks, all while filming their experiences.
While training as an actor, Nick was told to “think about someone that you’d fight for the most” and found that “every single time it was always my younger brother.”
Nick said: “When I was growing up, there was nothing about brothers and sisters when it comes to Downs Syndrome, it was always about the parents – which is lovely – but a sibling relationship is so important.
“When I was younger, it just would have been great to have a documentary or book or something that I could relate to.”
After much thought, Nick decided he would create a documentary, joining forces with family friends and film-makers, twin brothers Luke and Ed White.
Picking the brothers was easy, as Nick needed someone who was “close to me” as they were going to be around all the time.
He said: “We met up in London, started speaking about the project and they were in love with it just as much as I was.”
The team were able to secure a sponsorship from Panavision, who gave the brothers a camera to use on their travels.
While they originally only planned to tour the UK, there was a turning point once Nick and Alex filmed a video for the BBC.
“It was only a two minute video of us and it came out the same day as Donald Trump arrived in the UK on the front page and we just got bombarded, I mean there was over a million views, it was just crazy,” said Nick.
“People were contacting us to say this is brilliant, come see us, but we couldn’t see everyone so we had to decide.”
After narrowing it down, the brothers decided to visit Cornwall, New York, India and Vietnam.
Their journey began in July 2018 when they travelled to Cornwall, meeting Molly and Charlie.
In February 2019, the brothers travelled to New York where they met Amber and her brother Armand. Nick described himself as being very “surprised” in New York, as there is “not nearly as much in terms of funding”.
They visited Mumbai in April, where Nick described Alex as being “loved by everyone”, meeting Krisha and Sajid.
Despite this, Vietnam was the “hardest”, which they visited from September to October, meeting brothers Viet and Nam.
He found that some people looked down and “scowled” at Alex, adding there is “still a lot of education that needs to happen”.
On his time travelling and sharing experiences with his brother and other siblings, Nick said: “It is so, kind of heartwarming. You have similarities and it’s nice to be able to talk about it.”
“He loved it. You could take Alex anywhere, as long as he is with someone that he loves and knows, he’ll be fine.”
