AGAINST a backdrop of intense military action in Israel, Farnham couple Jono and Debi Rettallick have continued with their community arts project.

Steve Clifford, who has been monitoring their work from the UK, said they were "absolutely exhausted" when he spoke to them several days ago.

He said: "They are still working in the Muslim village of Wadi Foquin (near Bethlehem), but the tension there is incredible.

"The local people say they have never known a situation like this - there has not been any military action in the village itself, but many have family who have been caught up in the fighting."

Mr Clifford said the couple's presence, despite its hardships, had proved inspiration young people there.

Determined to stage the youth art exhibition they went to organise, the Retallick's intend to return home this weekend. (Sat 13 April)
