THE Museum of Farnham is celebrating after being awarded ‘full accreditation’ by Arts Council England for another three years - the highest level of national recognition for museums.

It means the town museum in West Street remains one of about 1,800 museums in the UK with the status.

To meet the requirements of the scheme, museums must demonstrate that they achieve clearly defined standards relating to governance and management, visitors facilities and collections management.

Curator Liz May said a huge amount of work went in to the submission for the award, so it really is fantastic news for all involved.

She added: “We’re very pleased, it’s been a very long process and arduous, but we’ve been judged to have a reached a good standard by the assessors.

“Accreditation is important to the museum as it demonstrates that we have met a national standard, which strengthens applications for public and private funding and gives investors’ confidence in the organisation.

“The process of applying for accreditation enables museums and governing bodies to assess their current performance, and it supports them in planning and developing their services.”

The Museum of Farnham has been fully accredited since 2005, but has to be re-assessed every three years.

The museum’s current exhibition is on the first two-minute silence, ‘Time to Remember’ marks the centenary of this event which was held in Castle Street, May 1916.

The exhibition is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm until Saturday, October 29.
