Farnham Swimming Club, spurred on by success in the previous round, were in fighting mood at the weekend when they hosted the final round of the Rother League.

Going into the evening, Farnham were leading Division 5 and were determined not to lose their advantage.

Club captain Neil Metcalfe led by example, 'swimming up' in age as well as competing with his contemporaries. He triumphed in three individual events (two butterfly and the individual medley), gaining valuable points.

Paul Roberts was also in fine form, taking both the U/16 and open freestyle events in style.

Emily Brownlow continued her recent improvement by taking first in both the U/16 and open breastroke.

Other individual winners were Liz Riley, Hanna Gardner, Bruce Jefferies, Stacey Gibbons, James Pickford, Trevor Fry, James Fox, Rachel Pallant and Victoria Carr.

In the relays, Farnam squads dominated, winning eight of the 15 events. In the U/16 age group, both the boy and girls' teams scored maximum points in both medley and freestyle events with a fine display of speed.

They were well supported by the U/12 boys, U/14 girls and the mixed open teams who swam strongly to take first in one relay each.

All the ages combined well in the final squadron event and sealed the evening with a victorious swim. Even the veterans team excelled with a fine winning effort.

On the night, Farnham were clear winners, despite a determined effort from an improving Gosport Dolphins squad.

In addition to winning this fourth and final round, Farnham emerged victorious overall in the senior age group, were awarded the aggregate boys' individual medley trophy and were also the overall winners of Division 5.

Paul Roberts and Rachel Pallant were awarded Rother League medals for their contribution to the Farnham team effort.

In total, the Farnham squad won 25 of the 50 events in this final round, with the majority of swimmers achieving personal best times in either individual or 'split' relay swims.

Chief coach Arthur McMahon described the team's performance throughout the four-gala series as "an outstanding effort and just reward for all the hard work put in during training."

He added: "This performance augers well for the coming months when Farnham will compete again in the National Speedo League and I am sure they will rise to the challenge."
