THE founder of a Farnham dog walking company died, together with a client’s puppy, in a tragic accident in Wrecclesham on Tuesday morning.
Amy Harris, 38, who launched Farnham Dog Walking in January, had just collected the dog from a house on the A325 Wrecclesham Road between the junctions of Echo Barn Lane and Quennells Hill, when the collision, involving a white Peugeot Boxer van, occurred at around 11.30am.
Surrey Police officers, South East Coast Ambulance and Surrey Air Ambulance attended the incident, but Mrs Harris was declared dead at the scene. The six-month old puppy also sustained fatal injuries.
The A325 was closed between both junctions while emergency services conducted an investigation and was not reopened until around 7.30pm.
Mrs Harris’s father Frensham resident Chris Bonner, who is fixtures secretary for Frensham Royal British Legion Bowls Club, relayed the sad news to members the following morning.
“Sorry to make this a collective message but I cannot face speaking to too many people at the moment,” he said.
“Jenny and I are trying to cope with the sudden death of our daughter Amy after a road accident at Wrecclesham yesterday. ”
The club has cancelled its two remaining fixtures for the season this weekend as a mark of respect.
Wrecclesham resident Robert Dunne, whose house fronts the accident site, was first at the scene and called emergency services.
“I heard the sound of an impact and saw the dog,” Mr Dunne told The Herald. “I thought it was only the dog that had been hit, but I went up to it and saw a lead was attached.
“I turned round and saw Amy about 20 yards further down the road.
“I called 999 and myself and another gentleman performed CPR for 15 minutes until the paramedics arrived and took over, but they stood away after an hour.
“The dog is owned by someone who lives up the road and she was its dog walker. People have been laying flowers at the scene of the accident.”
A lamppost outside Mr Dunne’s house was uprooted as a result of the collision and he said there had been five incidents on that stretch of the A325 in the 14 years he had lived there, involving collisions with lampposts, posts and fences.
Wrecclesham residents, including Mr Dunne, have been calling for road safety improvements to slow traffic down for many years.
“If it takes a fatality to say this has to get sorted, that’s unacceptable,” he said. “There is supposed to be a speed limit of 30mph and we have been calling for that to be enforced. We need a speed camera here.”
Wrecclesham county councillor Wyatt Ramsdale said: “I am desperately sorry this tragic accident has occurred. I hope I can escalate measures to introduce road safety improvements.
“A number of people have contacted me about road safety there over the last year and more in the last 24 hours.
“I have arranged to have a meeting shortly with Farnham MP Jeremy Hunt, East Hampshire MP Damien Hinds and Alton Rural East Hampshire county councillor Mark Kemp-Gee in the hope improvements can be a joint initiative with partnership funding.”
This is the second fatal accident to have occurred on the A325 near Farnham this year, involving a pedestrian.
Haslemere resident Samantha Hutchison died following a collision with a motorbike and a car in the early evening, near the junction with Binsted Road.
