THE death of a motorcyclist near Privett last week has sparked calls from road safety campaigners to highlight North HampshireÕs most dangerous country roads in an attempt to prevent further fatal accidents.
Peter Holloway (39) from Hedge End, came off his motorcycle on the A272 on Sunday, August 4, and later died at Queen Alexandra Hospital at Cosham.
The proposals put forward by road safety campaigners would see silhouettes of figures with crosses painted on them at the scene of every fatal accident along the busiest A-roads in the area. Campaigners have identified the A272, A32 and A31 as roads that might benefit most from this scheme.
The A272 carries 8,000 vehicles a day, and recently made the AAÕs most dangerous roads list, by experiencing 30 serious or fatal accidents over the past three years.
Particular reference has been made to motorcyclists when considering the signs. Three motorcyclists were killed on the A32 and A272 last year, and although none were killed on the A31, this road has been the scene of many serious and fatal car crashes over the past 12 months.
Sgt Kory Thorne of Whitchurch Traffic said: ÒThese suggestions have been made and we will look into them and see if it is feasible to put them into action.Ó
All Hampshire road signs have to conform with strict regulations and it is possible that such silhouettes would not get approval from the county council.
