MARKETS?and street entertainment was the order of the day as Alton Lions hosted Fayre in the Square.

The Market Square was brought to life on June 11 with music, dance, children’s activities and fun and games to join up with the Lions craft market in Cross and Pillory Lane and the farmers’ market on the High Street.

Officially opened by town mayor Matthew Bayliss and Alton Lions president Peter Bacon, the duo were accompanied by ‘Elvis’ (aka Dale Fontaine or Dave the Plumber) who sang some of The King’s numbers, to the delight of the crowd.

Throughout the day there was a steady throng of people who came to listen to the Kings Pond Shantymen, to watch the juggler, Punch and Judy, ride aboard Steve Cook’s miniature steam train, and to delight in the demonstration of country dancing by the children of Alton Infant School, and ‘have a go’ with Alton Morris.

The event was run in partnership and in aid of the children of Treloar School and College, and gave the opportunity also for other charitable organisations, having paid a pitch fee, to then raise funds.

It was sponsored by Alton Town Council, Molson Coors, First Exchange and Alton Toy Shed, and Sweet Chocolate. The compere was Colin Longley, of Lion Radio in Guildford.
