EXCITING Civil War skirmishes –complete with muskets and cannons — by the Sealed Knot’s Sir Marmaduke Rawdon’s regiment of foot, were just one of the highlights of Fernhurst Furnace open weekend.

The aim of the popular annual event is to raise funds to conserve the scheduled ancient monument and around 1,300 visitors enjoyed the chance to step back in time.

Event organiser Carla Barnes, who is Fernhurst Furnace preservation group chairman, said: “We are delighted to have welcomed the largest turnout yet.

“The volunteers and stallholders made a marvellous weekend.

“My husband Robin did hourly talks about the furnace history and future plans, which are being supported by Historic England in appointing a project manager.

“Entertainment and education were provided by Kevin Lochner of Hawking About. Craft stalls demonstrating spinning, blacksmithing and charcoal were very popular as were tea and bacon butties run by Fernhurst scout group.

“Gosport Living History gave a wonderful display.

“The beer tent, roast lamb and the vegetarian stall each did a roaring trade.”*Snap up a copy of September 26 edition to see all our pictures
