HASLEMERE District Scouts’ annual Muir Trophy competition took place on Marley Common with teams from Haslemere, Camelsdale and Fernhurst competing for the trophy.

Organised by newly appointed Assistant District Commissioner Peter Callender, troops could enter teams of four to six Scouts. They had to complete a seven km hike around the Marley Common area, during which they had to tackle six challenges over four hours. Points were awarded and judged by leaders from the district.

Challenges included mini pioneering- building the tallest flag pole; nature - recognising leaves and animals; nuclear bomb -moving it from one circle to another using just ropes; estimating using distances and compass bearings; and micro navigation - pegging out. Returning to the Camelsdale HQ the teams enjoyed an evening meal, followed by a traditional camp fire with songs, stunts, and games.

Haslemere entered two teams of four, Camelsdale one team of six, and Fernhurst one team of four. Fernhurst won with 57pts, followed by Haslemere A (55), Camelsdale (53), and Haslemere B (51).
