A CAMPAIGN has been launched to bring Christmas cheer to a remarkable Farnham woman who has lit up her house for charity every year since 1990.

Gail Whattingham, 70, and her family have raised more than £25,000 for an array of charities over the past two-and-a-half decades by elaborately decorating their house and garden in Greenfield Road every Christmas.

However, her display of some 100,000 Christmas lights was badly damaged by bad weather last December and many are in dire need of replacement.

Lee Moran of Moran Roofing has subsequently launched an online fundraising campaign with the objective of raising the £500 needed for the new decorations ahead of this year’s charity display.

Lee said: “I’m hoping we can club together as locals to help with a local legend and charity extraordinaire Gail Whattingham.

“Gail has done so much for the community over the years with her ongoing charity work.

“But after the poor weather last year, her famous Christmas lights were left in a poor state of repair and are in need of a revamp.

“These lights raise a lot of money for charity every year and have done as far back as I can remember. They also provide special moments at Christmas for children and adults alike.

“Let’s sort these lights out and make it a year to remember!”

Lee has offered to help put the lights up with one of his firm’s cherry pickers once the funds are in place.

This year’s lights display in Greenfield Road will support the Shooting Star Chase hospice for life-limited children in Guildford.
